Mestia
Capital of Svaneti: towers, treks, and Europe's highest settlement
About the city
Mestia is the main town of Upper Svaneti, at 1,500 m elevation in the Caucasus Mountains. It serves as the region's administrative and tourist hub with a population of around 2,000. Key draws: medieval Svan towers, trekking routes to Chalaadi Glacier and Koruldi Lakes, and access to Ushguli – one of Europe's highest continuously inhabited villages. Season is June–September; outside that window, trails are snow-covered and flights unreliable. In winter, the small Hatsvali ski resort operates near Mestia.
Getting there is harder than to other Georgian cities. The fastest option is a Vanilla Sky flight from Natakhtari (near Tbilisi): 45 minutes, 90 GEL one-way, but the plane is tiny, tickets sell out weeks ahead, and weather cancellations are routine. From Kutaisi: one flight per week for 50 GEL. Overland: train Tbilisi–Zugdidi (16 GEL, 6 hours), then marshrutka Zugdidi–Mestia (35–40 GEL, 3 hours). Direct marshrutka from Tbilisi: 50 GEL, 9–10 hours. Budget at least 3 days excluding travel time. To reach Ushguli you need a 4×4 or a local Delica taxi (200–250 GEL per vehicle). Car rental is possible, but some companies prohibit mountain roads – check the terms.

Answers about seasonality, routes, neighbourhoods and basic trip planning.
How many days do I need for Mestia?+
At least 3 days excluding travel. That covers the towers, one trek, and a trip to Ushguli. For serious trekking (Mestia–Ushguli on foot), plan 4–5 days.
Should I fly and is it reliable?+
Vanilla Sky from Natakhtari – 90 GEL, 45 min. The plane seats 17; book a month+ ahead. Flights are frequently cancelled due to weather. Always have a backup plan. From Kutaisi – 50 GEL, Wednesdays only.
How do I get there overland?+
Best combo: train Tbilisi–Zugdidi (16 GEL, 6 hr) + marshrutka Zugdidi–Mestia (35–40 GEL, 3 hr). Direct marshrutka from Tbilisi – 50 GEL, 9–10 hours, early morning departure.
Is the road safe?+
The road to Mestia is paved. Landslides happen but are cleared quickly. The road to Ushguli is partially unpaved, though it's being sealed. Winter snow may block routes.
Where should I stay in Mestia?+
Guesthouses are the main option. 60–80 GEL per night with breakfast and dinner. Book ahead for summer. Everything is within walking distance – there's no public transport inside Mestia.
How's the internet and phone signal?+
4G works in central Mestia but is unstable. On trails and in the mountains, signal drops completely. Get an eSIM in advance and download offline maps.
Is travel insurance required?+
Insurance is mandatory for entering Georgia since 2026. In the mountains it's critical: helicopter evacuation costs thousands of dollars.
What local food should I try?+
Kubdari (meat pie with Svan spices) is the signature dish. Also try kartopilaar (potato khachapuri) and fetvraal. Restaurants: Lushnu Qor, Cafe Laila. Lunch runs 20–35 GEL.

Delica taxi from Mestia – 200–250 GEL per vehicle (1.5 hours). Or a 4-day trek on foot through mountain passes. The road is now partially paved.
When is the best time to go?+
July–September: trails are open, weather is more stable. June: snow on passes but fewer tourists. Winter: Hatsvali ski resort operates, but trekking is off the table.
Can I drive a rental car to Mestia?+
To Mestia – yes, the road is good. But many rental companies prohibit driving to Ushguli and on unpaved roads. Read the rental terms before booking.
