Switzerland. Questions & answers

Popular questions

A quick read on visas, currency, season and logistics before your trip.

Do I need a visa for Switzerland?+

Switzerland is in the Schengen Area – most non-EU/EEA travelers require a Schengen visa unless covered by a visa-free regime.

What’s the currency and can I pay in euros?+

Swiss franc (CHF). Cards and contactless are widely accepted. Euros are sometimes taken at poor rates and change is in CHF.

When is the best time to visit?+

June–September for hiking and lakes; December–March for ski season; April–May and October–November are quieter and often cheaper.

Swiss Travel Pass vs Half Fare Card – which is better?+

Swiss Travel Pass gives unlimited travel + many museums – best for 3+ long travel days and intensive itineraries. Half Fare Card gives ~50% off fares – good for fewer or shorter trips.

Do I need seat reservations on panoramic trains?+

Glacier Express, Bernina Express and GoldenPass require or strongly recommend reservations in peak times. Regional and most intercity trains do not.

Car rental – motorways, parking, winter+

Motorway charges are often already covered on rental cars – nothing extra to buy. Parking: white lines are paid, blue zones are free with a time-disc limit, yellow means no parking. In winter, rentals come with winter tyres; mountain passes can close and chains may be required where signed.

Mobile internet: local SIM/eSIM?+

4G/5G coverage by Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt is excellent. eSIM is convenient for visitors; roaming can be pricier than local or regional plans.

Power sockets and voltage?+

Type J sockets (thin Europlug type C often fits), 230 V, 50 Hz. Pack an adapter.

Tipping and service charge?+

Service is commonly included. Tipping is optional – rounding up or adding 5–10% is appreciated for good service.

Are shops open on Sundays?+

Many shops are closed on Sundays, except at stations, airports and some tourist areas. Plan shopping ahead.
