Portorož (meaning 'port of roses' in Italian) is a resort settlement on Slovenia's 46-kilometer coastline, 3.5 km from the old town of Piran. This isn't a classic beach resort – the waterfront consists of a promenade with concrete platforms, grassy areas, and one central sandy beach. The main draw is wellness and thalassotherapy: mud and brine from the Sečovlje Salt Pans, thermal seawater, and Terme Portorož (the country's largest medical spa, day pass €30–50). You'll also find casinos, a yacht marina, and a summer film festival. The vibe is Central European resort with an Italian accent.
From Ljubljana – 1.5 hours by car via the motorway (eVinjeta required), bus ~2.5 hours. The nearest railway station is Koper (15 km), then a bus. The closest international airport is Trieste (Italy, 40 minutes by car) or Ljubljana (LJU, 120 km). The local Portorož Airport (POW) in Sečovlje serves small aircraft only. Free shuttles run between Portorož and Piran. For coastal trips (Koper, Izola), buses suffice. A car rental is useful for exploring inland Istria or Postojna Caves. Swimming season is June–September, peak in July–August (book 2–3 months ahead). May and September–October are quieter and cheaper, great for spa visits and excursions. In winter, the spas remain open but beaches are empty.
