The City of a Thousand Windows – Albania's essential cultural stop (UNESCO)
Berat is a 2,400-year-old city in central Albania, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the 'City of a Thousand Windows' for its characteristic Ottoman houses with their many windows, stacked up the hillside. The city divides into three historic quarters: Mangalem (on the slope below the fortress), Gorica (across the river), and Kala – the citadel district at the top. People still live inside Berat Castle – a rarity for such sites. Within the castle walls is the Onufri Museum with 16th-century icons. In the Old Town you'll find Gorica Bridge, the Ethnographic Museum, and the King's Mosque.
Berat is a 2-hour drive from Tirana (100 km). Buses (furgons) run regularly, costing 400–500 ALL (~€4). From Vlora – also about 2 hours, 500 ALL. The city is compact and can be explored on foot in 1–2 days. The climb to the castle is steep – wear comfortable shoes. Car rental is worthwhile if you plan to visit Osum Canyon (40 km away, rafting tours from February to June, starting at 7,000 ALL). Berat isn't a beach destination: people come here for architecture, winemaking (wine tours from €40), and tranquility. Best time to visit is April–June and September–October, when it's not too hot.

The lek (ALL). Euros are accepted less frequently than on the coast. ATMs are available in the center, but charge 500–1,050 ALL per withdrawal. Small cafes and buses are cash-only. Bring euros and exchange in town.
Bus (furgon) from Tirana – about 2 hours, 400–500 ALL. Departures from the East Terminal. From Vlora – 2 hours, 500 ALL. From Saranda and Gjirokastra – with a transfer. A rental car is the most flexible option; the road from Tirana is in good condition.
One full day is enough for the castle, museums, and a walk through the quarters. Two days – if you want to add Osum Canyon or a wine tour. Berat is often combined with Gjirokastra on an Albania itinerary.
Mangalem – the historic quarter below the castle, with guesthouses in old houses and atmosphere. Gorica – slightly quieter, across the bridge. A guesthouse room runs €25–40 for a double. Book ahead for peak weekends.
Berat is a quiet town with minimal crime. Locals are accustomed to tourists. The only concern – steep cobblestone streets: slippery after rain and tricky in the dark.
Berat is one of the cheapest destinations in Albania. Lunch for two – €10–20. A burek costs ~€1. Try tave kosi (lamb in yogurt), stuffed peppers, and local wine. Wine tastings start from €40 including transfer.
Morning – climb to the castle, visit the Onufri Museum (entry ~200 ALL). Then descend through the Old Town, see the Ethnographic Museum, walk along the riverfront to Gorica Bridge. Evening – dinner at a restaurant overlooking the illuminated houses.
4G coverage is available, but can be patchy in the castle area. An eSIM or local SIM card solves the issue. Wi-Fi in guesthouses works, though speeds can be modest.
Osum Canyon – rafting tours (February–June, from 7,000 ALL including transfer and lunch). Mount Tomorr (2,416 m) is nearby, a climb for experienced hikers. Vineyards in the surroundings offer tastings with a guide.
For Russian citizens – visa-free entry from April to October. Travel insurance is recommended: the hospital in Berat is basic, serious cases are transferred to Tirana (2 hours).
