Berat is a 2,400-year-old city in central Albania, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the 'City of a Thousand Windows' for its characteristic Ottoman houses with their many windows, stacked up the hillside. The city divides into three historic quarters: Mangalem (on the slope below the fortress), Gorica (across the river), and Kala – the citadel district at the top. People still live inside Berat Castle – a rarity for such sites. Within the castle walls is the Onufri Museum with 16th-century icons. In the Old Town you'll find Gorica Bridge, the Ethnographic Museum, and the King's Mosque.
Berat is a 2-hour drive from Tirana (100 km). Buses (furgons) run regularly, costing 400–500 ALL (~€4). From Vlora – also about 2 hours, 500 ALL. The city is compact and can be explored on foot in 1–2 days. The climb to the castle is steep – wear comfortable shoes. Car rental is worthwhile if you plan to visit Osum Canyon (40 km away, rafting tours from February to June, starting at 7,000 ALL). Berat isn't a beach destination: people come here for architecture, winemaking (wine tours from €40), and tranquility. Best time to visit is April–June and September–October, when it's not too hot.
