Ski Resorts in Montenegro: Where to Go and How to Get There
Montenegro is best known for its beaches and the Adriatic coast, but in winter it transforms into a mountain country with decent skiing conditions. While there aren’t many ski resorts, each one has its own charm and caters to both beginners and experienced skiers.
Where to Ski in Montenegro in Winter?
Kolašin 1600 and Kolašin 1450
The most popular ski resort in Montenegro.
Kolašin offers two interconnected areas: the older Kolašin 1450 and the newer Kolašin 1600. Here you’ll find:
- groomed slopes of varying difficulty (from green to black),
- a modern Doppelmayr ski lift,
- equipment rental and ski passes,
- cozy restaurants and hotels right by the slopes.
Season: December to March (depending on snowfall).
Location: In the north of Montenegro, at the foot of the Bjelasica mountain range.
How to get there: From Podgorica, it’s about 1.5 hours by car – the most convenient option. The best way is to rent a car in Podgorica or Tivat (via Localrent) and enjoy the scenic drive through the Morača canyon. You can also take a bus (check schedules at busticket4.me), but keep in mind that you’ll need a taxi from the Kolašin bus station to reach the ski slopes. We still recommend renting a car – it may even turn out cheaper overall.

Савин Кук (Жабляк)
This resort is located in the heart of Durmitor National Park, near the town of Žabljak. While it offers fewer slopes than Kolašin, it makes up for it with stunning natural surroundings – mountain peaks, frozen lakes, and pine forests. Here you’ll find:
- several medium-difficulty slopes,
- chairlifts and drag lifts,
- snowmobile rides and snowshoeing trails,
- local charm and cozy mountain cabins.
Season: Late December to early March.
Location: Žabljak, northwestern Montenegro.
How to get there: The drive from Podgorica takes about 2.5 hours. You can rent a car via Localrent – this is the most convenient option. Buses to Žabljak are also available (check schedules and tickets on busticket4.me), but keep in mind that you’ll need to walk or take a taxi from the bus station to the slopes.

Useful Tips
- Make sure winter tires and snow chains are included in your car rental.
- Book accommodation in advance – popular dates (New Year, February) get fully booked quickly.
- Check the weather: snowfall can be unpredictable, especially at the beginning and end of the season.
- Bring some cash – not all places in the mountains accept cards.
Montenegro isn’t just about beaches and summer holidays. In winter, it transforms into a peaceful mountain getaway: ski down snowy slopes, walk through pine forests, and enjoy the quiet charm of nature. The resorts of Kolašin and Žabljak are the top destinations for combining skiing with a scenic mountain escape.
