Aman Sveti Stefan Is Open Again: From $2 512 a Night and Why the Waitlist Is RealAccommodation

Montenegro's iconic island resort is back after five years. 57 rooms in restored 15th-century stone cottages, a private beach in an emerald lagoon, and a 2 500 m² spa – what's inside and when to book.

Aman Sveti Stefan is back. Villa Miločer on the mainland reopened on 22 May 2026, and the Sveti Stefan Islet itself on 1 July – the first season after a five-year closure driven by a legal fight over beach access. A night in a Miločer Garden View Suite now starts at $2 512, September dates are still bookable but the window is closing. Rates and availability are easiest to check on Trip.com – one of the few OTAs that carries Aman inventory, with free cancellation on most rates.

Key takeaways

  • 57 rooms across 80 acres: 33 cottages and suites inside a 15th-century stone village on the island, plus suites at Villa Miločer on the mainland.
  • Three pink-pebble beaches, including the fully private Queen's Beach in an emerald lagoon – guests only.
  • 2 500 m² spa with a 24-metre indoor-outdoor pool, four double treatment rooms, hammam, sauna and cold plunge.
  • Three island restaurants: Italian Arva, all-day Piazza on the central square, and the Cliff Bar above the sea.
  • From $2 512 per night for a Miločer Garden View Suite; Marija Sea View from $3 142. Breakfast included.
  • Free cancellation on most rates and instant confirmation.
  • Availability is thin: after five years off the map, the resort is filling up months ahead – especially in high season.

Why the demand is real

Five years of closure left Aman with a stack of would-be guests who normally book properties like this a year or more in advance. As soon as the reopening date was confirmed, the queue started clearing – and it was already long.

The reason people are rushing back is straightforward: nothing like this exists elsewhere on the Adriatic. This is not just a hotel by the sea but an entire fortified 15th-century village turned into accommodation. Crooked stone lanes, terracotta roofs, tiny inner courtyards – and the whole thing is shared only among guests: 33 cottages on the island and 8 suites at Villa Miločer on the mainland, 57 rooms across 80 acres.

The guest list from earlier eras includes Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Kirk Douglas, Princess Margaret and the Beckhams. Names by themselves do not sell rooms – but they signal what the property actually is: a closed, singular place rather than another five-star with a view.

The third factor is the settlement with the state. Two of the three beaches are now open to locals and visitors – but Queen's Beach, the emerald lagoon tucked into a pine cove, stays guests-only. That makes it, officially, the single most private stretch of coastline in Montenegro.

What's inside: the island and Villa Miločer

The resort is split into two parts, linked by a narrow strip of land.

The island of Sveti Stefan is a fortified 15th-century village with terracotta roofs. Its 33 cottages and suites are built into the old stone houses; no two are the same. The flagship 165 m² Sveti Stefan Suite runs on two floors, with a private terrace pool, a fireplace in the living room, a steam room and full Adriatic views. The Grand Suite is smaller at 120 m², with a balcony and sea view. The standard Deluxe Cottage – 65 m², terrace, sea views on most units.

Villa Miločer is a 1930s mainland residence – the former summer home of Queen Marija Karađorđević. Unlike the island, it runs year-round. There are 8 suites: some face the bay and the Sveti Stefan Islet, others open onto the park with 800 olive trees, cedars and pines. Categories and sizes:

Spa, beaches and restaurants

Aman Spa is a standalone 2 500 m² building in the private cove of Queen's Beach. The 24-metre pool runs from indoors to outdoors and back; there are four double treatment rooms with their own dressing rooms and bathrooms, three hydrotherapy areas with sauna, hammam and cold plunge, a dedicated yoga and pilates studio, and a 140 m² fitness centre with Technogym equipment. Treatments use the in-house Aman Skincare line built on wild Montenegrin herbs.

Three pink-pebble beaches:

Three island restaurants: Arva with Italian cooking built on local produce; Piazza on the central island square (open all day, light plates, antipasti, taverna style); and the Cliff Bar – cocktails and light fusion right above the drop, the sunset spot on the coast. The main restaurant serves buffet and à la carte breakfast, 24-hour room service and beach service.

If you plan to explore the country, renting a car makes more sense – Localrent aggregates local companies from 30–40 € per day.

What to see nearby

The location works well for day trips. Budva Old Town is 15 minutes by car, Kotor Old Town with the Bay of Kotor – 40 minutes, Lake Skadar with its monasteries and pelicans – about an hour. According to traveler reviews, the best pattern is a couple of nights at the resort combined with day excursions.

Popular ready-made routes: the Great Montenegro Tour from 79 € per person covers Lovćen National Park, the Crnojević River and the panoramic viewpoint above the Sveti Stefan Islet. For the northern canyons – Full-day Tara River rafting from 134 € per person. For a bay-focused day – Kotor Blue Cave and Our Lady of the Rocks from 45 € per person.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a night at Aman Sveti Stefan cost?

A Miločer Garden View Suite at the villa starts at $2 512 per night for two, breakfast included; the Marija Sea View from $3 142. Island cottages cost more, with top suites reportedly reaching 7 000 € per night in high season.

Is free cancellation available?

Yes, on most rates. For 1–2 September 2026, for example, free cancellation runs until 23:59 on 1 August. Reservations are confirmed instantly.

When is the best time to visit?

The island is seasonal, open from 1 July to late September. The sweet spot is September: the sea is still warm, crowds thin out, and rates drop noticeably. Villa Miločer runs year-round.

Can you visit the island without a room?

Yes, but with limits: a 25 € guided island tour, or a table reservation at Arva or Piazza at least 24 hours in advance. Actually living inside the 15th-century village requires a room.

What is included in the rate?

Breakfast is included on most rates, along with Wi-Fi, on-site parking (including valet), access to public areas of the spa, and use of the beaches. Extras – treatments, transfers, à la carte dining – are billed separately.

Conclusion

Aman Sveti Stefan is one of those rare hotels worth planning a trip around, rather than fitting into one. Five years of closure did not produce a comparable alternative anywhere on the Adriatic, and after the reopening, availability shrinks faster than new rates are published. If you are considering the resort for 2026, checking dates and locking in a room now is the sensible move. Live availability and rates – on Trip.com, with free cancellation on most rates.
