How to Get from Tivat or Podgorica Airport to Your Resort?

Planning a trip to Montenegro and flying into Tivat or Podgorica? In this article, we explain how to easily get from the airport to popular resorts like Budva, Kotor, Herceg Novi, and more.

How to Get from Tivat or Podgorica Airport to Your Resort?

Montenegro has two main international airports — Tivat (TIV) and Podgorica (TGD). If you’re arriving here for a vacation, the first question after landing is: how do you get to your hotel or resort? Below, we cover all available options with their pros, cons, and practical tips.

Tivat Airport: Closer to the Coast

Tivat Airport is located just 4–10 km from the most popular seaside resorts. Here are some approximate distances and travel times:

  • Kotor — about 8 km, 15–25 minutes by car
  • Budva — about 20 km, 30–40 minutes
  • Tivat town center — about 4 km, 5–10 minutes
  • Herceg Novi — about 25 km, 45 minutes to 1 hour

Important: Travel time can increase significantly during the high season (June–September) due to heavy traffic.

Podgorica Airport: Closer to the Central Part of the Country

Located about 11 km from the capital city, Podgorica Airport is much farther from the coast. Here are some approximate distances and travel times:

  • Kotor — about 90 km, 1.5–2 hours
  • Budva — about 65 km, 1–1.5 hours
  • Tivat — about 90 km, 1.5–2 hours
  • Herceg Novi — about 150 km, 2–2.5 hours

Important: Travel time can increase significantly during the high season (June–September) due to heavy traffic.

How to Get to Your Resort?

1. Private Transfer

  • The most convenient option, especially if you’re traveling with luggage or children.
  • You’ll get a fixed price, personal pickup with a name sign, and easy online payment.

Where to book a transfer:

✔️ Welcome Pickups

✔️ KiwiTaxi

2. Taxi

  • You can grab one right outside the terminal.
  • Important: agree on the price in advance — meters aren’t always used.
  • Often more expensive than a pre-booked transfer.

3. Car rental

  • A convenient option if you have a driver’s license.
  • It gives you the freedom to explore Montenegro on your own terms — perfect if you plan to travel around the country.
  • However, if you’re spending your entire vacation in one place and don’t plan to move around much, renting a car might not be worth the cost.

Where to rent a car:

✔️ Localrent

4. Bus

  • In Tivat, the nearest bus stop is about 1 km from the terminal — you’ll need to walk. In Podgorica, it’s more complicated: first, take a local city bus (they don’t run often!) to the central bus station or city center (then walk to the station), and only then transfer to an intercity bus heading to your resort.
  • Not convenient with luggage.
  • No service during nighttime.

What’s the best option for travelers?

There are several ways to get from the airport in Montenegro — from buses to car rentals. If you’re on a tight budget, buses might work, but schedules and routes aren’t always convenient. Taxis are fast, but prices can be unpredictable.

In practice, the most convenient options are a fixed-price transfer or a rental car — especially if you’re arriving with luggage, late at night, or planning to explore the country. Both options offer more freedom and peace of mind at the start of your trip.
