Lake Bled

Blejsko jezero

Glacial lake in the Julian Alps with Slovenia's only island and a 15th-century church

Lake Bled (Blejsko jezero) is a glacial lake covering 1.45 km² in northwestern Slovenia, at 475 m elevation. It measures 2,120 m long and 1,380 m wide, with a maximum depth of 30 m. Water temperatures reach 24–26 °C in summer, making it suitable for swimming. In the middle sits Bled Island (Blejski otok) – Slovenia's only natural island – topped by the Church of the Assumption, accessed via 99 stone steps. On a 130 m cliff above the northern shore stands Bled Castle.

From Ljubljana, take a bus from the main bus station – €6–7 ($6.50–7.50), 1 hour 15 minutes, departures every 15–30 minutes. Trains run to Lesce-Bled station (€5–7), but it's 4 km from the lake – you'll need a bus or taxi from there. By rental car, it's 55 km via the A2 motorway, about 45 minutes. A vignette is mandatory.

Access to the lake is free, open 24/7. The walking loop is 6 km, takes 1–1.5 hours, and is flat enough for strollers. Allow 4–6 hours for a full visit including the island and castle.

About

What's Here

The lake stretches east to west, framed by mountains on all sides. To the north, Bled Castle sits atop a steep cliff; to the west, the Triglav massif (2,864 m) – Slovenia's highest peak – is visible on clear days. The water is emerald-turquoise, coloured by a limestone bed and thermal springs feeding the lake. The lakeside path hugs the shoreline, alternating between forested sections and open viewpoints. On the southwest shore, the Grajsko kopališče swimming area charges €10–12 in summer. On the east side, a park and docks serve as departure points for pletna boats.

Three ways to reach the island: traditional wooden pletna boats (€18–20 per person, 20 minutes each way, up to 40 minutes to explore), rental rowboats (€15–20/hour), or swimming. On the island, the Church of the Assumption features a baroque interior from the 17th century and the famous 1534 wishing bell. Admission to the church and bell tower (54 m tall) costs €12 ($13). The Potičnica café serves traditional Slovenian potica (nut roll pastry).

Top viewpoints: Mala Ojstrica (20-minute climb, classic island-and-castle view), Ojstrica (30 minutes, 360° panorama), and the western shore near the campsite. Before 9:00 AM the lake is nearly empty and the light is soft – ideal for photography.

History

Past & Present

Lake Bled formed approximately 14,000 years ago when the retreating Bohinj Glacier carved a basin in the Julian Alps limestone. The earliest lakeside settlements date to the Bronze Age. In 1004, Holy Roman Emperor Henry II granted Bled to the Bishopric of Brixen, making the lake and its surroundings an ecclesiastical estate. The island church first appears in written records in 1185.

In the 19th century, Swiss physician Arnold Rikli established a health resort on the lakeshore based on water, air, and sunlight therapy – launching Bled's tourism history. During the Yugoslav era, the lake served as Josip Broz Tito's official summer residence; his villa (Vila Bled) on the south shore now operates as a hotel. After Slovenian independence in 1991, Bled became the country's premier tourist symbol, drawing over 1 million visitors annually.
