Taxi Apps in Montenegro: Do Uber and Bolt Work Here?

At the moment, international ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt do not operate in Montenegro. This means that tourists have to rely on other ways of getting around the country.

How to get a taxi in Montenegro?

In most Montenegrin cities, taxis are still ordered the old-fashioned way – by phone or by flagging one down on the street. This might feel unusual, especially if you don’t speak Serbian. Many areas don’t have reliable taxi apps, and some companies don’t accept online bookings at all.

In tourist hotspots like Budva, Tivat, and Kotor, you’ll often find taxis parked on central streets or near markets. But in smaller towns, it’s unlikely you’ll find one just driving by – you’ll need to call ahead.

TeslaGo App

TeslaGo App is one of the few taxi apps available in Montenegro – but it only operates in Podgorica. You can book a ride and pay by card, which is convenient if you’d rather not make a phone call or explain your location. However, the app has a small fleet, so during peak hours or in the evening, wait times can be long due to a lack of available cars.

It’s also important to note that TeslaGo doesn’t work in other cities like Budva, Kotor, Tivat, or Herceg Novi – even if you have internet access, you won’t be able to book a ride through the app. For travel along the coast or into the mountains, it’s better to look for alternatives in advance: car rental, private transfer, or local taxi services.

Local taxis

This is the most common way to get around Montenegro, especially outside of major cities. You can order a taxi by phone, and some companies also accept bookings via Viber or WhatsApp. However, it’s not always convenient: not all dispatchers speak English, and there’s no guarantee that a driver will be available quickly.

In addition, not all taxis use meters, so it’s recommended to confirm the price in advance or agree on a fixed rate – especially for intercity rides.

⚠️ Tips for tourists

Since mobile taxi apps are practically nonexistent in Montenegro and the overall system still feels stuck in the 2010s, tourists may find alternative transportation options more convenient and often more cost-effective:

  • Car or scooter rental

Ideal for those who want full flexibility and don’t want to depend on schedules. It’s easy to book online via Localrent (large selection of cars with Russian-speaking support) or BikesBooking.com (scooter and motorbike rental).

  • Private transfers with a driver

A great solution for airport pickups, intercity travel, or day trips. You can easily book with KiwiTaxi or Welcome Pickups – both let you choose the vehicle class, see the price upfront, and avoid language barriers.
