Independence Museum

Muzeu i Pavarësisë

Albania's first museum, housed in the building where the country's first government met in 1912

The National Museum of Independence (Muzeu Kombëtar i Pavarësisë) is Albania's oldest museum, founded in 1936. It occupies the building that served as the seat of Albania's first government under Ismail Qemali from December 1912 to January 1914. The two-story 19th-century structure was originally a port quarantine facility.

The museum is on Pavaresia Street (L. Pavaresia), 200 m from Flag Square, in central Vlora. It's a 5-minute walk from the port. The History Museum and ethnographic quarter are nearby.

Admission is 200–300 ALL (≈ $2–3). A visit takes 30–60 minutes. The exhibition is compact – 4 rooms across two floors. An on-site guide provides commentary in Albanian, English, and Italian.

About

What's Here

The museum occupies a two-story stone building from the 19th century with a distinctive street-facing balcony. It was from a balcony like this (the original Qemali house no longer exists) that the first government's decisions were announced. The interiors have been restored to closely resemble the 1912–1914 setting.

The ground floor displays documents from the National Awakening period (Rilindja): photographs, newspaper clippings, and busts of first-government members. The cabinet meeting room with the original table where Qemali's ministers convened is the centerpiece. The second floor houses Ismail Qemali's personal office – its modest furnishings underscore the conditions under which the first state was built. One of Albania's oldest national flags is displayed here.

The collection comprises over 1,000 items: original documents, weapons from the independence struggle, photographs of key movement figures, and historical maps. The museum is small but informative – labels are in both Albanian and English.

History

Past & Present

The building was constructed in the 19th century and originally served as a quarantine station for the port of Vlora. After independence was proclaimed on November 28, 1912, it was hastily chosen to house the new government – Ismail Qemali's own residence was unsuitable. From December 1912 to January 1914, Albania's first cabinet met here under Qemali's leadership.

In 1936, the building was converted into a museum – the first in the country. In 1962, for the 50th anniversary of independence, it received national status. A full renovation in 2002, timed for the 90th anniversary, restored the interiors, updated the exhibition, and improved lighting. The museum remains one of Albania's most important memorial sites.
