Travel insurance for Qatar: what the visa actually requires

Qatar is the one country on this list where health cover is a legal entry condition, not just a smart precaution. Since 1 February 2023 every visitor who needs a visa in advance must hold a health insurance policy before that visa is issued.

  • Mandatory health insurance applies to visa-required nationals; the policy must come from a Qatari-registered insurer or an international company approved by the Ministry of Public Health.
  • Travellers eligible for visa-on-arrival are exempt for their first 30 days — but that waiver only clears the paperwork, not the hospital bill.
  • Citizens of GCC countries are exempt from the requirement entirely.
  • The government scheme covers emergencies inside Qatar up to QAR 150,000 plus ambulance and repatriation — it does not cover trip cancellation, baggage, or activities like desert or water sports.

The mandatory scheme costs around QAR 50 (~$14) per month and pays up to QAR 150,000. Private care in Doha is excellent but priced for expats: a single ER visit or a day in a private hospital runs into the hundreds of dollars, and anything needing an evacuation home is a five-figure bill.

A full travel policy layers cancellation, baggage, and higher medical limits on top of the mandatory minimum. Compare plans below.
