History
Early 20th century plans led to the funicular: the lower section opened in 1908 and the upper in 1912, conceived as a cool summer escape with grand views for city residents.
Through the mid-20th century cars were renewed; by the 21st century Monte Brè settled as Lugano’s classic viewpoint with signed trails to Brè and Gandria.
In 2023 the line marked its 115th anniversary; in early 2025 the cars were refurbished with panoramic roof glazing and upgraded comfort.
