What is this place

Höhematte is Interlaken’s central open meadow between Höheweg and Jungfraustrasse – the main landing field for paragliders and a postcard viewpoint toward the Jungfrau massif.

Key features

  • Size ~12–14 ha – a rare, purpose-preserved open green in a Swiss resort core.
  • Primary paraglider landing zone – steady daytime activity in suitable weather; launches typically from Beatenberg.
  • Direct Jungfrau vista, framed by the Höheweg promenade and the Victoria-Jungfrau hotel frontage.
  • Step-free lawns and paths with benches and flower beds.
  • Hosts town events; parts of the field can be fenced temporarily.

What to see

  • Tandem paraglider landings with a Jungfrau backdrop.
  • The Höheweg promenade and nearby Kursaal gardens (the floral clock is by the Kursaal, not inside Höhematte).
  • Evening light on the mountains; short walks to the Harderbahn valley station and the Aare riverfront.

History

Once monastery land (Interlaken Augustinian convent, dissolved 1528), Höhematte was purchased cooperatively in 1864 by locals to keep it permanently undeveloped.

By the late 19th–early 20th centuries, Höheweg had taken shape as the resort’s showpiece, with Höhematte as its green foreground. A severe storm in 1970 damaged mature trees; plantings were renewed while retaining the meadow’s open character.
