Petrović Castle (Museum of Contemporary Art)

What is this place

The Petrović Castle is the former winter residence of King Nikola I in Kruševac Park, Podgorica. Today it houses the Museum/Center of Contemporary Art of Montenegro and the Petrovich-Njegosh Foundation.

History

The site at Kruševac was purchased in 1886; the cornerstone was laid in 1891, and construction largely finished by 1894. The palace served as King Nikola I’s winter residence and as a representative urban seat of the Petrović dynasty.

After regime changes, the complex evolved into an art venue: exhibitions started in the 1980s, and in 1995 the Center of Contemporary Art of Montenegro was established, merging earlier city collections.

Today the palace functions as a museum platform and a protected heritage site, with active exhibitions and a significant collection of modern art.

Practical information

Location: Kruševac Park, northwest of central Podgorica, on the Morača riverbank.

Getting there: 5–10 min by taxi or car from the center; about 25 min on foot; look for “Kruševac bb”.

Access: entry via the main portal; some rooms may be closed during exhibition installations.

Visiting hours: typically Tue–Sun 10:30–18:30; schedules vary by exhibition.

Visit duration: 30–60 min indoors, 1–1.5 hr including the park.

Best time: April–June and September–October; summer is pleasant thanks to park shade.
