How can I check whether my phone supports eSIM?+
Dial *#06#: if the screen shows an EID number, the phone supports eSIM. On iPhone you can also look for "Add eSIM" in Settings → Cellular; on Android — in Settings → Connections (or Network) → SIM manager. Or find your model in our list.
Which phones support eSIM?+
iPhone XS / XR and all newer models, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer plus the Z Fold and Z Flip series, and most recent flagships from Xiaomi, OPPO, Motorola and Huawei. Exceptions: iPhones sold in mainland China have no eSIM, and some budget versions of Android models skip it — check the exact model.
Will an eSIM work on a carrier-locked phone?+
No. A phone locked to one carrier will not accept another provider's eSIM. Ask your carrier to unlock it before the trip — check under Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock on iPhone, or by inserting a SIM from another carrier on Android.
What if my phone does not support eSIM?+
Buy a local physical SIM card on arrival (usually at the airport or a carrier shop, with your passport), use a pocket Wi-Fi router, or rely on your home carrier's roaming package. A local SIM is often the cheapest for long stays.
Why use an eSIM instead of roaming or a local SIM?+
An eSIM gives you mobile data from the moment you land: no hunting for a shop at the airport, no passport registration and no roaming bills from your home carrier. You buy and install it online before the trip, and your main SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts.
What do I need to use an eSIM?+
A carrier-unlocked phone that supports eSIM, an internet connection to install the profile (hotel or home Wi-Fi is fine) and a bank card for payment. Not sure about your phone? Check it in a minute.
How do I choose an eSIM provider?+
Look at four things: which local network the eSIM uses, how many gigabytes you need, how long the plan is valid and the price per GB. Compare plans for your destination side by side, or answer a few questions and we will suggest a plan.
When should I install the eSIM?+
Install it at home over Wi-Fi a day or two before departure, but switch the eSIM line on only when you land: turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and set it as the line for mobile data. Most plans start counting days from the first connection abroad, not from purchase.
Can I keep my main SIM card active?+
Yes. Phones with eSIM work in dual-SIM mode: keep your main SIM for calls and SMS (bank codes still arrive) and use the eSIM for data. To avoid roaming charges, turn off mobile data on the main line.
How do I remove an eSIM after the trip?+
Delete the eSIM profile in your phone settings (Cellular / Mobile network → the eSIM line → Delete). It does not affect your main SIM card. If you might top up the same eSIM on your next trip, you can simply switch the line off instead.
Does the eSIM work immediately after arriving in Montenegro?+
Yes, if you activate your eSIM in advance, mobile internet will be available as soon as your phone connects to the local network.
Can I use one eSIM in Montenegro and other countries?+
Some plans work only in Montenegro, while others cover the entire Balkan region or Europe. Always check the list of supported countries before purchasing.
Do I need to register with my passport to use an eSIM in Montenegro?+
No, passport registration is not required when using an international eSIM. This makes the process easier, especially for short-term travelers.
Can I make calls with an eSIM?+
Most eSIM plans are data-only. You can make calls using messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, or FaceTime.
Is the connection stable outside tourist areas?+
Coverage is generally good even in small towns and villages, but signal strength may be weaker in remote or mountainous areas.
