What is this place

The Zentrum Paul Klee is a museum and cultural venue on Bern’s eastern edge dedicated to Paul Klee. Opened in 2005 in Renzo Piano’s three-wave building, it holds the world’s largest Klee collection.

Key features

  • Renzo Piano architecture 2005 – three undulating “hills” embedded in the terrain with a steel frame and green roof.
  • Around 4,000 works (~40% of Klee’s oeuvre) plus significant archives – a major research resource.
  • Three-hill layout: North – Creaviva (family studios), Centre – exhibition galleries, South – collection storage and archive.
  • Auditorium for ~300 and a year-round programme of concerts and talks.
  • Hours and tickets: Tue–Sun 10:00–17:00, Mon closed; adults CHF 20, concessions CHF 18, students CHF 10, children 6–16 CHF 7.

What to see

  • Rotating selections from the Klee holdings – paintings, watercolours and drawings in themed displays.
  • Large temporary shows on modernism and Klee’s circle.
  • Creaviva hands-on studios and the landmark “three-waves” architecture with its park and the Schöngrün restaurant.

History

A major donation in 1997 by Livia Klee-Meyer prompted the project; in 1998 the Schöngrün site was chosen and Renzo Piano Building Workshop commissioned, with a preliminary scheme in 2000.

The building opened on 20 June 2005, funded by the city, canton and private patrons, establishing a new cultural hub for Bern. Since then the core display has rotated for conservation.

In 2021 the paul&ich community garden was added, and by 2025 the Centre marks its 20th anniversary with celebratory programming.
