What is this place
Al Wakrah Beach is a string of urban beaches in Al Wakrah, south of Doha, running along the Souq Al Wakrah promenade and the Family Park. Shallow water and solid facilities make it a favorite for families with kids.
Key features
- Extensive shallows – safe for kids but true swimming is limited; aim for high tide.
- The Souq Al Wakrah section links to a seafront promenade with cafés and easy beach access.
- Facilities include shaded shelters, toilets and showers, kids’ playgrounds, plus volleyball and soccer courts.
- Lifeguards and changing rooms operate at the Souq-side beach, the most “urban” stretch.
- ~30 km from central Doha via Ras Abu Abboud Expwy; public transport reaches Al Wakra Metro, then Metrolink buses or a short taxi.
What to see
- Family beach zone with playgrounds and shaded gazebos.
- Open public strand with wide tidal flats and Gulf vistas.
- Souq Al Wakrah promenade with traditional dhow boats and direct beach access.
History
Al Wakrah grew from a fishing and pearling settlement on the Gulf; its natural tidal flats long served as boat landings and a local relaxation spot.
A major upgrade came with the reconstructed Souq Al Wakrah in 2014 and the opening of the public beach by the souq in 2017. In recent years the seafront and park areas have added services and family-friendly infrastructure.
