Description

What it is

Adži-paša’s Bridge (Old Bridge over the Ribnica) is the oldest bridge in Podgorica, spanning the Ribnica River near its confluence with the Morača. Its origins go back to the Roman period, with a major reconstruction in the 18th century.

Key features

  • Sited at the Ribnica–Morača confluence – the historic crossing of the old town.
  • Earliest construction phase dates to Roman rule, later heavily reworked.
  • A major 18th-century rebuild defined today’s appearance and the name Adži-paša’s Bridge.
  • Dual toponymy in use: “Old Bridge over the Ribnica” and “Adži-paša’s Bridge”.
  • Compact viewpoint over the stony riverbed, best in low water.

What to see

  • The stone arch spanning the Ribnica just above the confluence.
  • Canyon-like Ribnica riverbed and riverside footpaths.
  • Vistas toward neighborhoods on both banks.

History

A crossing existed here already in Roman times (1st–4th c.), linking routes across the Ribnica toward the Morača. Through the medieval and Ottoman eras the bridge remained a strategic connector of the settlement.

In the 18th century the structure underwent a thorough rebuild, after which the name Adži-paša’s Bridge took hold. Today it is a recognizable historic landmark and a gateway to the riverfront paths.
