Description

What it is

The Millennium Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Morača River in Podgorica and a key modern city landmark. Designed by Professor Mladen Ulićević, built by the Slovenian company Primorje, it opened on 13 July 2005.

Key features

  • Main span 140 m – a compact single-span crossing over the riverbed.
  • Pylon 57 m high – a skyline marker with a fan of stays.
  • Stay system: 12 cables support the deck and 24 are anchored as counter-stays – a clearly expressed structure.
  • Two traffic lanes plus sidewalks on both sides – links the historic center to the New Town.
  • Construction cost about €7 million – a major early-2000s investment for Podgorica.

What to see

  • The pylon silhouette and stay fan, especially striking under evening lighting.
  • Views of the Morača gorge and the Preko Morače and Nova Varoš districts.
  • The carriageway with pedestrian sidewalks and vistas to neighboring bridges.

History

Conceived to ease central traffic, the project was authored by Professor Mladen Ulićević and executed by Primorje.

The bridge was inaugurated on 13 July 2005, Montenegro’s Uprising Day. It connects Ivan Crnojević Boulevard with Trinaestojulska Street and quickly became a symbol of contemporary Podgorica.
