Lusail Stadium is Qatar’s largest and most iconic sports venue, located about 20 kilometers north of Doha in the city of Lusail. Owned by the Qatar Football Association, it is the largest stadium in Qatar and the Middle East by capacity, and the second-largest football stadium in Asia.

Built as one of the eight venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Lusail Stadium hosted the tournament’s final match between Argentina and France on 18 December 2022. The stadium can hold up to 88,966 spectators, though it will later be reconfigured to a 40,000-seat community venue featuring retail, educational, and sports facilities.

Beyond its scale, Lusail Stadium stands as a landmark of sustainable design and cultural identity – a centerpiece of Qatar’s vision for the future of sports and urban development.

Inside, the stadium integrates advanced cooling systems powered by solar energy, creating a comfortable environment for players and spectators alike. Post-tournament, it will be transformed into a mixed-use community hub with cafés, shops, and sports and education facilities.

History

  • 2014: procurement and design initiated.
  • 2017: construction began.
  • 2022: inaugurated with the Lusail Super Cup.
  • December 2022: hosted 10 FIFA World Cup matches, including the final between Argentina and France.

After the tournament, Lusail Stadium is set to become a model for sustainable reuse, representing Qatar’s long-term vision of turning global sports infrastructure into civic assets.
