What is this place
KKL Luzern is Jean Nouvel’s culture and convention complex on Europaplatz between Lucerne’s station and the lake. Its centrepiece is a world-class Concert Hall complemented by congress halls, restaurants and the city’s art museum.
Key features
- Signature roof 113×107 m with a 45 m cantilever over the square and water; the underside has ~2,000 aluminium panels reflecting the lake surface.
- Concert Hall with ~1,840–1,898 seats – a 1:1:2 “box” volume, 24,000 plaster reliefs, echo chambers and an adjustable canopy.
- Three bodies under one roof: Concert Hall, multipurpose Lucerne Hall, and the congress wing with terrace foyers.

History
Following the 1989 competition, construction began in 1995. The Concert Hall opened on 18 August 1998, and the full complex in March 2000; the main organ was installed in 2000.
In the 2010s the bold cantilevered roof underwent refurbishment stages. By 2023, the 25th-anniversary year of the hall, the KKL had reaffirmed its status as Central Switzerland’s leading cultural stage.

Location: Europaplatz 1, 6005 Lucerne – beside the railway station on the lakefront.
Getting there: 1–3 minutes’ walk from Luzern station to Europaplatz; 2–5 minutes to the boat piers.
Access: Step-free entrances and lifts to all levels; wheelchair spaces available in the Concert Hall.
Visiting hours: According to event listings and guided-tour schedules; standard tour ~60 min / CHF 20 (advance booking).
Visit duration: 1–1.5 hours for the building and a tour; longer if adding the museum or a concert.
Best time: Daytime for architecture and the waters under the cantilever; concert evenings for acoustics and foyer views.
